When I print a photo via Print with Preview to an Epson 2200 or an Epson C84
and check the box Description, the text prints below the image that is in
the File Info Description field.

However, the "carriage returns" that are present in a multi-line Description
entry print as small squares, and the lines do not wrap at the carriage
returns but print out as a continuous line, only wrapping when the line
width exceeds the width of the image above it.

Is there any way to control this behavior so the lines print out as I
entered them in the File Info field? Is this a quirk of PS or of the Epson
drivers?

I tried adding several multiline description that was to a photo and printing it to the Epson print preview (and cancelling the actual print). I found that if the line break was from wrapping, there was no problem. If the line break was from a carriage return (Enter key), the box appeared -- presumably representing the unprintable newline character. The wrapped multiline description appeared without a box even if it took up several lines in the output.

I would say this appears to be a bug. Whether Epson's or Adobe's I don't know. Both PS and the Epson driver seem to be capable of handling a multiline description, as long as it is one long wrapped line. Adobe is able to include a hard return in it, and the question is whether (a) Epson is able to accommodate this and (b) Adobe uses the encoding needed by Epson to accommodate it.

The workaround is not to use a hard return in the description. Between Epson and Adobe, it won't work.

I have always observed some quirkiness in how IPTC description fields
display in various image browsers. What looks good in PS
File Info doesn't wrap in ThumbsPlus; PS prints with little squares where
the carriage returns are (as described in my first post); looks OK in
BreezeBrowser...

Not sure where the problems lie but it would be nice if would become
standardized and more uniform.

Anyone know how to enter a keyboard item that sends a carriage return to the
Epsons?

You might try Shift-Enter and see what it does.
