Yes it does. But it will likely get your site banned from Google at
least, and probably other search engines as well.

It also shows on UAs with no CSS or CSS disabled.

Mark: funny you should mention the quote thing... I'm actually using
google's newsgroup interface, and they don't have a quote feature.

I am giving away a PHP script, and I just want to see how many people
are actually using it. I thought I would put some hidden text in
there. Then I could search and see how many people are actually using
it. It's more out of curiosity than anything.

I've used it on 1 of my sites for the past 3 years with no adverse effect. On
mouseover it shows.

The software used is a convenience - each poster is responsible for the
content of their postings to usenet.

If your software is letting you down - get a new one.

http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html has a list of Google sites still
using the old (aka decent) interface.

Google isn't going to see the source of the PHP script anyway - it will
only see the final output.

Hidden text is a well-known method of "spamming" the search engines.
They don't look on it very favourably. Who knows - the OP may not get
dropped from the search engines, but it is likely that he will.

Google isn't this super evil super god... they don't like abuse, but
their are a lot of uses of hidden text, including marking your own
scripts, Dreamweaver uses them to mark out templates, many CMS uses
them, CSS often hides text which may be shown when printed...

Google doesn't like abuse, but its not going to penalize people randomly
.... it is VERY unlikely that google will drop them from the search

The sites I work on are frequently at number one for what we want, where
we discuss a product it often beats the leading brand behind it.

Google WILL not rank a site if you don't have content, rely on images
etc...

However I would reccomend deleting the research page until you have
something on it, for some reason google does seem to dislike "coming soon"

What you could do is ask to tell you where its being used... provide a
form for it ...

Actually it's likely that he won't. It really depends upon what else
is available in the index for that category. If all the other sites
are similarly spammed then no engine can drop them otherwise they'll
have no category. So, people looking for results in that category will
have to go to another engine to find results. Not a good thing for an
engine. So, while they'd really all prefer that people didn't make
sites with dumb stuff like hidden text, the engines will take what
they can get. And they do. Because they have to.

Correct. If it wasn't the cause, it was awfully coincidental though.
That site had the Googlebot visiting literally every day for months,
and 1 day after I placed that link, it disappeared for a month, and it
never stopped after it started again.
