I'll start working with another friend on the development of an
open-source Wiki application.
Our motivation is to make Wikis much more user-friendly. We've installed
Wikis for customers and it's been a real flop because they are not able to
use it (even for us it took some time to learn the snippets to add/edit
content). Another curse is that some questionable people have bothered
putting some Chinese spam, and viagra ads on the customers's web sites and
this is unacceptable not to be able to first review the content before it
goes online.

So, something need to be done. I'd like to have your opinion on what you'd
like to be changed in Wikis, what would be "the Wiki of your dreams" :)

I think there should be "Report" links on every page, as well as "Edit"
links. Also, the "Edit" links should be optional, for instance, a group of
users could manage the content of a web site, but they might not want the
public to edit this content, only this restricted group. There should be
optional moderation to review content before it appears online
(optionally).

Adding content, editing content should be as easy as using MS Word. I'll
definately implement an existing HTMLArea javascript class to offer a
wysiwyg editor.

Please feel free to tell us your opinion :)

You asked for my opinion: there are already more than enough wikis out
there. You may find that a more efficient way of working would be to take
an existing wiki -- choose one that is already closest to your
requirements -- and modify it until you're happy with it.

Offer back your improvements to the original developers, and you may find
that they thank you and adopt them.

And if they don't, you can simply release your improved version as a new
project -- that's the beauty of open source.

Join a wiki project. Don't reinvent the wheel and think it's better because
you painted the tire red.

I don't think it's worth it starting from an existing Wiki, because none
of them use tableless layout and I'm more comfortable with it. But it's
going to be a lot of fun to start such a project :)

Caveman with a square wheel
looking at offerings of
Megarigid's[1] new wheels: "Why are these wheels triangular?"

Megarigid salesman: "It's an improvement over the square wheel.
It eliminates one bump."

[1] (Dis-)Similarity of that name to an existing software manufacturer's
name is purely deliberate.

Most Wikis have editable templates. Even if the default template includes
a table, you can probably remove it easily.

I'm running (a slightly modified version of) phpWiki at work. No tables.

(My modification, in case you were interested, is to allow the templates
themselves to be parsed as PHP instead of treated as plain HTML. This has
allowed me to use the Intranet's existing authentication/permissions
system to control access to various parts of the Wiki. Also, one or two
modifications to enhance the editing syntax.)
