I almost wanted to chose CCNow as the payment system, until I ran
through their Client's agreement, which contains some parts I don't
like.

Things like "you will prominently display on your site a statement that
CCNow is the Authorized Online Retailer from whom Customers may purchase
my Merchandise" and so on. CCNow's understanding is that they are the
retailer, they own the customer and you are just a supplier etc. A bit
too much self-promotion for my tastes. Who do they think they are ?

CCNow even reserves the right to charge higher prices to the customers,
i.e. you sell something at 50, they could charge the customer 100 and
keep the difference.

I need a payment system through which to accept credit card payments,
the customers are my customers not the customers of the payment system
and which doesn't change the prices (except for a small fixed fee) -
period.

On the other hand the sales volume will initially be low, so the monthly
fixed fees should be low or, better, zero. The payment system should
finance itself through a percentage of the sales.

Any suggestions ?

Check out PayPal' snew Pro-Merchant program - it looks pretty good to me.
Supposedly totally transparent to the user. Someone else told us about it
(Charles, I think?) last week or so.

I would expect that to be remedied quite soon, given how big PayPal's
international market is.

In the meantime, I have one client using CCbill - I don't know anything
about them, but it's at least another one to check out.

Yes, likewise. I am guessing because it is new, it hasn't been launched
everywhere.

Not available in Germany.

Or anywhere outside the US, for that matter. Businesses that want to
use the Website Payments Pro program need to be US-based. I got that
confirmed the other day when I asked them directly.

Any mention on possible expansion to international availability?

Not a word, other than this:

Actually, this is the entirety of the reply I received (e-mail headers

Original Message Follows:
------------------------
Form Message
customer subject: Website Payments Pro for businesses outside the US
customer message: Additional Information: 'As I'm a business outside
the US, I've noticed by messages on Usenet newsgroups that some people
are rather reluctant to pay for services using PayPal. After hearing
about your service Website Payments Pro, specifically with the "Direct
Payment API", this sounded like a service my business could use. But
after a few clicks, I discovered that this service is only available to
US-based businesses.
Is there a similar service available to non-US based (and, of course,
verified) businesses?'

As you've probably figured out, the "original message" is the message I
typed into their contact form on the web.

Thanks for that Kim!

This is the key:

What I figured. Looks to me like they are getting the US one up-and-
running first before making it widely available.
