Hi,

Sorry to be asking such a stupid question, but I am so ignorant on this
subject that I can't even find the answer by googling on "DNS records".

We are presently hosted at AH, and trying to switch to Allis (MIS). My
friend told me:

---------------------------------------------------------
I've done this many times before. The registrar
doesn't matter. What matters is the DNS records, and
what the DNS records say.

Step one is to turn down the TTL (time to live) on the
DNS records. We should change it from "x days" or
whatever it is to, say, 60 minutes.

(We need to wait at least the time of the old TTL
before the official switchover)

Step two is to create a mirror of the site in the new
location. I can do this if you like.

Step 3 is to test the new site, make sure it all works.
We have some hard-coded (non-relative) links but that's
not really a problem

Step 4 - Change the DNS records to point to the new IP.
Within the new TTL, all the web servers on the web will
refresh their lookups with the new IP

Step 5, turn up the TTL on the DNS records, back to say
1 day.

Step 6, we can use the current host as a warm standby
backup until the account runs out and lapses.
--------------------------------------------------------

I can't figure this out, & he's on vacation.

We are paid with AH till July 15, but they are sending me invoices so I
need to get this show on the road. Yes, I've been putting it off -
because I'm baffled.

Starting with the first thing that I don't know / understand:

** Where ** are my DNS records?

<sigh!>

The advice he has given is pretty solid. Yes, you'd better find out how to
change DNS as soon as possible. You should be able to find out the registrar
my going to http://www.whois.sc/your_domain.com (replacing the
your_domain.com part)

He suggests lowering the TTL, but I'm certain I am not able to adjust this
physically myself at enom (my registrar). However, I am presuming that this
will be set to a low figure of 3 hours or less anyway.

Does your current site run any databases? You'll need to allow more time for
moving, if so.

Anyway, best of luck and maybe extend AH a month to allow some breathing
space. Two weeks doesn't allow much time to have the 'warm standby' he
mentioned. Is he back before 15th July?

You update your DNS with your registrar (GoDaddy, Dotster, whoever you
registered with). Simply enter the new nameserver information and <blam-o
/> you're off and running.

But make sure you have migrated your current code etc, and tested it before
doing this!

Ahh! very helpful. Thank you. In that case, I will *not* try to do
anything with the TTL.

No, mercifully ... not yet.

Yes ... I was thinking that ... but also hoping not to have to grapple
with AH billing dept if I can possibly avoid it.

Well, I will initiate that process with Billing, though. I'm asking for
trouble if I don't.

I don't know!

I've sent him an email ping, but haven't heard anything back yet.

Thanks!

What's the domain name? The new host is ALLIS? I have no idea what that is.
Is there anyone else who can mirror your current website? You could quite
easily transfer everything by then.

We have two: they both refer to the same site.

kcal.ca and lvec.ca

Heheheh ... it's "our" Allis:

Oh, I'm already confirmed at MIS (Allis' company) ...

And! best of all ... just now I was able to contact my friend (who also
does all the content for our site), and he is going to be able to handle
the DNS stuff, & do the transfer of the content.

We should be OK.

It's funny ... I didn't know what I was doing when I set up the website
last year ... just went ahead and did it.

I wonder how much of the internet has been put together like that, eh?

:-)

Thank you!

Probably lots of it as I did the same in the beginning but I would never let
anyone else move my sites...
Paranoid Obsessive I guess. LOL. Still I am glad I forced myself to learn
what to do as the need for it
came up.

Good luck getting everything moved.
