Hello Everyone,

My wife owns an online home based business and up until now, I have been
able to satisfactorly manage the website for all the business needs. We
have recently been receiving a lot of requests for a search feature on our
website since we do have lots of products and some customers visit our site
looking for a specific brand or product name.

I have done some google searches on site search companies and know that
there are plenty to choose from; however, this is an area of web management
that I am unfamiliar with. Are there any recommendations for site search
products that will meet our needs?

We are mostly concerned with our customers being able to enter a product
name or brand and be linked to the page or pages where that product can be
found on our website. We do not want any advertising accompanying the
search or the search extending into websites outside our business website
and understand that we will need to pay for this service.

So if anyone has some good recommendations for a site search product that
can service 500-1000 pages, I would appreciate hearing them.

Thank you,
Justin

I don't know that I'd trust rentacoder.

Justin - Can you tell us a little more about what's already on the site?
(i.e. is there an online shopping cart... is there a database serving up the
product information... or is the site just made up of static web pages?)

I can supply you a free Perl script, just modify what we use at The

We are mostly concerned with our customers being able to enter a product
name or brand and be linked to the page or pages where that product can
be found on our website.

First off, for a site which deals with a database of products (please tell
me you are using a database of some kind!) a search function should be
built in as part of the initial design. If your site is database driven,
it would be best to create a script which searches *directly* through the
database and returns matching rows.

Barring that, if your site is still made up of separate, mostly static
pages, there are a few good scripts out there that index sites directly
over HTTP. This can be good and bad. Good because you index exactly what
the customer will be seeing. Bad because you index exactly what the
customer will be seeing (including meaningless text), *and* it's an extra
layer above all the rest of your site.

I'm currently building such a search function, totally free to use, which
self-spiders and pretty much takes care of everything as long as you set
it up correctly. It requires PHP and MySQL. A working demo is here:
<http://www.greywyvern.com/search?q=index> with more info, and a download
link, here: <http://www.greywyvern.com/orca#sear>.

However, my script is in beta and while it works perfectly on my server
and a few others, your server may have a few... unique settings which may
hinder it ;) If mine isn't right for you there are a number of others
available from sourceforge.net and hotscripts.com.

You can get a book called "Google for Dummies" (no offense meant, its a
great book) or a higher end one called "Google Hacks". Both can hep you
setup a search form for your site that uses Google but only searches your
site. Basically, you feed their search terms to Google with an added
"keyword" for "site:www.mydomain.example" to limit the results.

OR you can get a search engine of your own. There are open source
softwares. The keywords to look for are harvester, spider, and search
engine. I would recommend one but you didnt mention which operating system.

Google has tips on how to use Google on your own site. No need to get the book:

Thank you all for your replies. There have been several questions abou the
website in particular. The pages are static, meaning that they are not fed
by a database. We modify the pages manually when shanges are needed.

Please feel free to take a look at the site at www.cardstockheadquarters.com

As mentioned, we are mostly interested in getting a site search function so
that our customers can quickly and easily find products on our website. We
would also be interested in boosing our listing on web search engines like
Google, Yahoo and Lycos for example, but this is currently secondary to the
site search function.

Thank you,
Justin
