Please tell, when was the last time you made a web thingie that made you
think "WOW - that's soooo smart, I feel real good about that"?

Maybe it was a ... no, I don't wish to prompt.

What was it? Why/how did it give you the 'WOW' feeling?

Don't be shy ;)

My last time was probably when I managed to complete my first
interactive, vector-data generated map, or perhaps it was the last
mapping site I made :) They all pretty much make me feel good when
they're finished.

The most recent thing (computers in general) that made me feel "wow" was
my sudden ability to use Photoshop and produce nice looking stuff :D

In which case I could add that I had a wow-effect when I first managed
to make letters and angled brackets appear as colours and lines on a
computer screen. Or even the first time I dialed the 'number of the
Internet' and saw a real site, had a live connection! :-)

I remember thinking "wow" in an ironic sense when I first <shudder/>
used AOL. I had just signed up for the account (using a free X months
disc, which I intended to cancel after X) and within twenty minutes I
had sent to my brand-spanking-new, not even given out to my friends
yet, email address! :)

And lo, William Tasso didst speak in alt.www.webmaster:

Well, I recently put a new look on the work website and included a cool
thing which takes a bit of explaining.

The site is designed so the content is almost 100% swappable. This makes
it very easy to substitute new translations. Right now all we have is
English and Chinese, but the fact that you can switch from one to the
other on *any* page (rather than on an introductory page only) was
something I was always proud of.

However, the link to go to and from the Chinese version was always
available, even if the user a) didn't understand Chinese, b) didn't even
have a Chinese font available to display the characters.

So I took a few minutes today to delve into the skunk-werks and do a
little parsing of the Accept-Language request header, and made it so the
link is only shown if Chinese is one of the languages the client says it
can understand.

Just a small thing, only took me a few minutes, but I thought it was cool,
nonetheless ;)

I did something like that recently in Welsh and English for a local
council (Conwy Borough). I can tell you that I was damn proud of the way
it worked too! Wiped the smiles off the smug "webteam" that's for sure :D

My particular favourite part was the ability to switch from English to
Welsh and back *after* having submitted a form, and having the same
posted data shown *without* having the form resubmitted.

Im more SysAdmin than webmaster so I guess it would be the fan site I did
for a game called Dominions 2. Every night a "cron" job generates random
maps for the game. The sizes are tiny, small, medium, large, huge, and
epic. The maps come in 3 color styles. Each of the 6 size categories gets
30 new maps a day (10 in each color style) for a total of 180 new maps
every day. The results are shown as thumbnails. Clicking a thumbnail shows
a larger view, and a link to download the map as a zipped file.

Does pre-web BBS count?

If so, it was when I went online with my BASIC-written BBS program running
on my Apple II+ and the first user called - the auto-answer circuit I had
built for my 300-baud modem clicked, the driver sensed the status change,
and the program fired up :)

Haven't quite had a WOW like that for awhile!

I'd say last Friday when I finally finished a system that controls the
store displays, shopping cart data, product management and control,
picking/packing/shipping lists, order control and sales reporting - all for
six different domains (well, owned by the same parent company, but six
separate brandings)

Definetely sat back and thought "Now *this* is good work - a janitor could
run all six stores with no training" :)

A long time back maybe '95 or thereabouts I had a boss that was frankly a
bit of a jerk. The office had just one net connected PC - out in
reception. He brought me a floppy disk to analyse asking if I could read
the file it contained. Well of course I could but it was simply a
shortcut file containing a URL to what promised to be a russian
site. It turned out one of his mates had 'saved' this erotica for him and
he was ever so disappointed that he would have to actually pay to view -
remember those days when you had to pay for your conection by the minute?
Did I say jerk? I meant tight-fisted jerk, of course.

The last time...

Having spent 5 months programming animation and making 600 electrical
connections for the Grinch in Myer windows
(http://www.myer.com.au/christmas/windows.asp). It took a 31 hour
straight shift to do the final install on the Friday and into Saturday.
channel 9 news, Channel 7 news, The Age, Herald sun, The mayor and
several other dignitaries and over 100,000 people were there (Seriously,
if any one here lives in Melbourne, they'll vouch for this). All the
controls were run over the internet to a GUI I made on good old Mozzie.

The kabuki curtain came down... And it worked... I had control over the
six windows from my PC... WOW.
