Does MSN search use a feed from Google?

Reason I ask, one of my pages has bombed on MSN and Google, both at the
same time.

Not so far as I know - as I understand it, they are fierce competitors.

Perhaps the algorithm used by both is similar with regard to the page in
question. It was the fact that the page bombed on BOTH that intriqued me.

Made any changes recently?

Yes, but not one that I thought would have been significant. It was on
http://sellyourhouseforfree.com/ I made a link to "books", which was a page
full of Amazon affiliate links, that I have now dropped (apart from
anything else they weren't selling at a rate that justifed the free
advertising for Amazon, Google Adwords in this context perform and pay FAR
better.)

The affected page was the homepage. This is the only change I have made to
it for some time. For a good number of months it was doing very well
indeed (page one on Google for "house for sale" without the quotes. Page
one on MSN for "houses for sale" without the quotes) then bombed on Google
and MSN both at the same time after making the "books" link. (Could be
coincidence, but I doubt it.)

Other pages such as http://sellyourhouseforfree.com/pictures.php are still
coming up #1 on Google for "pictures of houses for sale" (without the
quotes). This one has not been affected, yet the homepage has bombed.

My own feeling is that because the homepage has very little on it, it
wouldn't take much to dilute it, or shift the emphasis. The link I had on
it was simply "books", which could be for anything. I have now removed the
link (a few days ago). It will be interesting to see if I regain the
excellent postion I had enjoyed before, but of course never took for
granted!

Just a note to any SEO "experts" out there. If you plan on giving a
critique of my site from your own flavour of smoke and mirrors, then forget
it. I am more than happy with my performance to date, using common-sense
methods.

Notice any pattern change in bot behaviour? as reported by the site logs.

Can't say that I have, but I haven't studied them in any detail. I
usually get daily visits from all the major ones.

Was wondering if there'd been a network outage at/near the datacentre
where your server lives.

It still shows a pr5 from where I am.

I would love to have a page that has "bombed" *down* to pr5. :)

Instead of your page "moving down" it could be just that other pages
have crept up. You know, taken you on the outside...

Common sense as opposed to seo? Carry right on sir!

No. My guess would be coincidence.

I didn't even look at the PR thing! I don't hold much store by it.

This is a possibility, but the change was sudden, and happened on MSN
and Google at the same time. This was why I wondered if MSN used a
Google feed (or some sort of Google query).

Thanks Bill. Some coincidence don't you think? The page was sitting
merrily on page one for many months, then at the same time bombed on
both search engines?

My own feeling is that it was to do with the change I made. That there
is a common part of the Google and MSN algorithms that produced the same
result.

I have restored the page to the way it was when it was performing well.
I will report back when it's former position is restored!
