A bud of mine is on 8.
I can't seem to get my head into a 12 book series.

I've actually already read all 9 that he's written so far, so I guess
not literally "at the moment". Currently I'm reading Across the Face of
the World by Russell Kirkpatrick. Too early to tell yet whether it's a
good book though. ;-)

Get a copy of Groosham Grange by Anthony Horowitz - you will be absolutely
stunned to see how identical JK Rowlings' book is. Why she wasn't sued for

She was sued for plagiarism, by someone else whose book had a similar story
line, and who claimed to have originated the term Muggles, among other
things. I always thought her first book borrowed heavily from _A Wizard of
Earthsea_ by Ursula K. LeGuin (1968). In that book, a young man goes to an
island school for wizards, where he's the star of his class, until his
competitive relationship with another student leads him to conjure an evil
spirit; after that experience his face is left with a permanent mark.

I got about half way through the "second" series before stalling, thinking,
er, havn't I read this before? ISTM that the second series is simply a
re-telling of the first one, from a different perspective.
Or was I reading a different second series? Or did I miss the point
entirely?
The *real* series's, seriess, collection of series (damn, what *is* the
plural of series) are of course those by E E Doc Smith. Classic stuff.
Written back in the days before the space shuttle so he could make it up any
way he wanted :-)
Cheers
Richard.

I also can recommend Mordant's Need (2 books), and the Gap series (5 books
IIRC) And there is Rave the Just (short stories), and an older short
stories book (forgot the name).

Lord Foul is there again, but... the story is quite different IMNSHO.
Thomas travels out of the land (which has gone through major changes
itself), meets new people, etc. And also plays a much smaller role.
Personally I consider the second series better.

Alot of the stuff in the first Harry Potter book is word for word the same
as in Groosham Grange. I mean, I don't see how any sane person could read
the two and deny that she copied.
I honestly have no feelings good or bad about the Harry Potter books...never
did. My son was actually the one who brought both books to me and pointed
it out, after a family friend bought him a copy of Groosham Grange. I was
stunned.

It's been a very long time since I read any fiction[1], but what strikes me
about Harry Potter is the number of adults reading it. I thought they were
supposed to be kid's books!

Although they have me hooked, I am also surprised at the amount of
people who say, just like me, that the last book they have read was at
school, and Harry Potter broke their dry spell.
