"The Australian record industry has won a major legal victory over alleged
music piracy."
Sounds like something good right?
Does till we get to ....
"The site itself had not hosted the material, but provided hyperlinks to
websites with pirated music."
and
"The ISP hosting the site, [...], was also found guilty."

Sounds good to me. The host should have taken the site down when contacted.

Well, it does say that they could have stopped it but didn't - it's hard
to judge on the information given in that article. Still, it doesn't
bode well. The outcome of this one will be interesting:
http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/communication...39201983,00.htmDoesn't look promising given the BBC article.

dark days indeed if this ruling is upheld
I can't see such a ruling being upheld under appeal tho
And I definitely cannot see such a ruling in most other nations - eg
holland, canada, france, etc...not to mention south america, eastern
europe, south east asia.

Hmmm...looks like it. I wonder if the record industry will give refunds on
records bought on the strength of a good single, only to find that the rest
of the album is crap!
Seems they want it all their own way just now.

exactly
and the hypocrisy of the recording industry corporations is galling
In rewriting those final paragraphs in the article, we could have
something along the lines of:
The multi-national manufacturing video recorders and photocopiers, Toyko-
based Phony, was also found guilty. The judge said it could have stopped
the copyright infringement but did nothing about it.
The case against Phony and the other manufacturers was brought by several
members of the public..
A spokesman for the general public welcomed the ruling, saying it
confirmed that the manufacture of equipment for use primarily in the
copying of music, video and books/magazines, was illegal.
