what does anti-alising (or whatever) do?

Antialias prevent the text from looking jagged .
Antialias make it fuzzy especially in small type like 10 or 9 points.

When you publish or export a movie containing static text, Flash MX creates outlines of the text and uses the outlines to display the text in the
Flash Player , the antialiasing
is there a default property.

How to turn off the anti-aliasing for text oriented objects? Sometimes it looks better, w-out this feature turned on.

MX 2004 has the ability to use alias or Antialias typo , the setting is in
Text properties panel.

For flash 5 and MX you have the following choices :

You have 5 options to get nice and sharp looking text.

1) Use text filed and do not include font outlines.
It ca be dynamic , not necessarily loaded into level ,
just type your content and set the text box to Dynamic

2) Change the movie quality using Property:
Set Property (High quality) = 0 or 1 or 2
0- horror
1- chunk
2- high

3) Use Device Fonts : _sans , _serif and _typewriter
Macintosh,
_sans = Helvetica
_serif =Times
_typewriter = Courier

Windows,
_sans = Arial
_serif = Times New Roman
_typewriter = Courier New

4) import transparent gif .
these are extremely small and have no big impact on the movie size ,
well unless you import 50 pages in gif :) than there maybe a little size up
problem .
Here is a sample of a page that uses all gif's for a text :
http://www.rui-camilo.de/main.html
This size uses entire text from imported Gifs.

5) using bitmap fonts
especially design tiny fonts for use in flash or some just bitmap :
