I am on XP Pro an just installed the whole MX2004 suite. No problems so far. Maybe this would also work for you: first do a complete uninstall of the old software, then perform a harddisk check, defragment the drive, and perform a clean install of the software. Dunno if you're on PC or MAc though. After the uninstall also ran a registry tool to get rid of some superfluous entries. Maybe this has all nothing to do with it; but like I said, no problems here so far.

I had a similar problem and tracked it down to a virus called pinfi.A. This worm is supposed to be non-destructive but it caused very strange goings on. I was getting the unexpected file format with all MX files. I saved a couple of 2004 files then uninstalled & reinstalled Flash. I could then open old MX files but not the ones I had saved on 2004.

The publish feature worked well after reinstalling Flash but a few hours later it would just produce an empty projector. This would happen with any FLA, even some very old ones I had done in Flash 4. Reinstalling Flash reinstated the ability to create projectors but only for a few hours at a time. In fact, the virus wrecked all .exe files created in both Flash & Director. The Director ones gave an error message & the Flash ones were empty. Norton Antivirus fixed the program files but the projectors were unusable & I had to re-compile them all. The old antivirus program I was using did not detect this virus. It may be worth updating your virus definitions.

Good luck!
