Did anyone actually answer the question asked?? I'm not exactly the
be-all-end-all of question answer-ers but I'll give it half a shot .....

In front page, if you press "enter" it will definately insert a noticeable
line. If you press "Shift" and "enter" at the same time it will make your
text appear directly under the original line - like ordinary word documents.

Have no idea if this has helped - prolly just made things worse, but oh well
:D Cant blame a girl for trying to help ...

I use Dreamweaver, but have a client who uses Front Page.

There is a big problem happening and not familiar enough with
front page to fix it.

Every time they open a page and change a few prices on their products
and up the page. FP inserts a blank line between every line of code.
The pages are going from a few hundred lines to over a thousand now,
beside making it hard to work on.

How can I fix there FP to stop it from happening and is there a way to
get rid of the extra lines at this point?

I know this may be the wrong place to ask, but I am not able to post
in the front page group for some reason and I need some help quickly

thanks

You need to contact the Printer's maker... this is a technical question
about the printer's driver; and it's anyway impossible to answer because you
didn't even mentioned what printer you're talking about!

Hi there,
I have a question that I cannot fix no matter how hard I look.
I cannot adjust the LPI for a laserwriter select in windows XP. It worked
fine on Win9x, and on the mac, but for a machine running XP, the lpi
selection in the printer properties does not exist. It still has the DPI
option, and others but the only option I need at all is the LPI. Help!
Thanks, Fred

Wow, you've really set the bar high for yourself. If you've never shot or
edited video you have a steep learning curve. Just shooting the video
requires a level of specialized knowledge. It is not like shooting stills.

I wouldn't use a digital still camera to record the video. They can only do
very short bursts of moving video. I would suggest buying a decent video
camera, probably with an S-video connection out. Firewire out is also a
possibility. It also should have a composite video in and out.

You then need a way to digitze the video you shoot so you can edit it. For
this you can purchase a card if you are on a Wintel PC. Pinnacle makes a
good one, but there are several manufacturer for this. You can also buy a
"black box" solution which allows you to connect to your PC via firewire or
USB and has several different inputs for video, audio, etc. Again, Pinnacle
makes a good version of this.

After you've digtized the footage, you will need edit it. Here is where
Premiere, Ulead, or Vegas Video (from Sonic Foundry) come in. I think I'd
recommend Premiere because there are so many books available to help you
learn to use the program. I'd suggest the Adobe Classroom in a Book for
Premiere. After Effects is a special effect type program. You would use that
if you wanted to do a split screen where you show two locations at once, or
something like that, for example. I'd stay away from that for now.

How you render the final, edited video will determine how large the file is.
The file type, compression codec, pixel size of the final output, sound
quality, etc. will all effect file size.

You still will need to decide on web delivery systems for streaming.
Quicktime, Flash, Real Media, etc are all good choices.

I have tried to be real brief here, and have left much information out. Good
luck. I would actually suggest teaming up with someone with a little more
knowledge and pay them to help you. You will learn much more and much more
quickly. You will also be productive much more quickly.

Hi,

For a client I need to make a 1 minute movie of their activities.
Because I have to film at different locations there will be some cut &
paste work and video editing. I've no experience in all this.

The client suggested buying a digital camera that can record movies,
but I doubt whether that's a good idea. Most digital cameras store
their movies in .mpeg format and I'm not sure whether it is easy to
import mpeg files into video editing applications (adobe premiere,
after effects) and what the result will be (quality?).
Can someone confirm?

I also have to decide which software to buy. I know there is Adobe
Premiere & Afteraffects (don't really understand the difference) but
also easier application like Ulead Videostudio. Are there any other
easy ones that I should consider?

Can someone help me with the choice of such a software package? I want
to be able to cut & paste, move & delete frames easily, downsize every
frame and produce .mov and/or .mpeg files for the internet. It is
important that the movie gets really small, it will be implemented in
a website (between 1-5 MB)

I also would like to be able to easily add titles and stuff in between
frames.

Thanks for anyone helping me out on this.

My Sony F707 still camera records mpeg that I was able to import and
edit in Adobe Premiere. It was pretty good quality for a student
project, but I think you'd get better results with a digitial video
camera. Maybe you can just rent a digital video camera?

I've only used Premiere and Windows movie maker software, so I can't
really offer comparison. But I found Premiere fairly easy to use and
you can easily do the kinds of things you're talking about.

Actually... no. I was side tracked last weekend with home repairs. My wife

wanted to do some painting and we re did the stairwell hall. We'll be
putting the molding up this coming weekend and installing a new hall light.
I'm actually pretty happy with the results so far, but the new color on the
walls may require new carpet to go with it. :-P The technique used was a
thin textured layer of plaster that was painted a very dark matte burgandy
and on top of that we sponged on a somewhat lighter rose and the moldings
are an umber stained oak with some decorative carving and the ceiling is
white to tie it to the rest of the house. No pictures taken yet, but I will
try to put a page up later with the results.

VideoStudio isn't bad... ULead has "higher end" video apps, also that might
be better... Pinnacle, the people who make PowerDVD have PowerDirector...

Do they have to be MOV or MPG? You might also get good compression with
WMV/ASF

But as mentioned in another post, if you've not done this before you're in
for a real eye-opener. This will not be quick. Many of these apps have to
re-render the video after every effect is put in during edit mode. That
takes time :) Also, don't plan on doing anything else on this computer while
the video is rendering -- it will take 100% of your CPU cycles. You're gonna
need a helluva lot of free hard drive space, too. The slower your CPU, the
longer the rendering is gonna take. Depending upon your timeline to delivery
of the product and how fast you can learn the apps and process the video, it
may be best to farm this portion out.

Barton
Mmmm, it looks like I better outsource this job. This reminds me of a

You'll need more than just software if you want to edit video.  You'll
also need a dedicated hard drive just for your video, a high grade
single chip or better yet at least a medium grade 3 chip camera (and the
knowledge of how to use it, including lighting framing etc...) and at
least a firewire card.  And this will most likely only give you a
'prosumer' look, but will be necessary if your final output is the web.
If this is a large client then I would recommend farming this out to a
video production company (or at least the editing portion). You may come
out cheaper than if you purchased the equipment and you will definitely
have a higher quality product.

Of course I'm biased because I work for a video production company.  Oh
and please excuse any grammatical errors in this post... I haven't had

Iee-yie-yie, Ryan.

The good news is that you've got a live one. And they have paid you when
you've billed them. And there's tons more work.

The other good news is they apparently have some high-end literature
produced by competent designers. Chances are they are acquainted with what
pro design costs. Their past designers likely did not work without some sort
of agreement and you shouldn't either.

Have a heart-to-heart with the marketing rep; the guy you get along with.
Find out why they are using you instead of other designers. Cost? Quality of
work? Conflicts with the other designers? What....? Did they actually
switch, are they using others on different projects, are they waiting in the
wings, can you get an exclusive....just find out what they're thinking in
regard to you and future plans.

Work up agreements for what you have going right now. These needn't be
complex documents, just a project description, estimated cost, payment terms
and the standard GAG cover-your-ass clauses. Put it in front of them, get it
signed or work it out. Also present proposals for upcoming work.

No need to feel shy about it. If they spent $800,000 on marketing, they are
*expecting* it. Get your agreements in order and turn them into an anchor
account for your fledgling business.

Good luck!

I have the gig, and have already created a few designs for the company. In
my stupidity, and lack of business savvy, I did all this without a

I've already completed a website for them, and have been paid for such.
Basically I have been ebbing back and forth between continuing with school

with me being inattentive.

I talked budget somewhat with the client on Tuesday. Basically, the
marketing rep and I get along very well, so he has decided to send a pile

over
$800 000 on marketing only two years ago. I'm not sure what that meant,

I'm pretty sure that what he was saying was fact. I've seen some of the

Yes, letter size is standard in the US, but many people are able to
print Legal size (8.5"x14").

Of course, at my previous job, I was able to print anything up to 60

a4 is a world standard, isn't it? It's slightly smaller than letter size,
so formatting something for a4 should be fine for someone printing it on
letter size paper.

Right now, I'm using an area of 181 x 245 mm - does anybody know if this

hey Jeff,

You've just got to try Painter, if you haven't already, for the brush effects.
Nice job as they really look like watercolor.

Thanks for the complement about mine. :) The instructions were to make a
unified set, easily picked out of a mix of samples on a table. I can post some
larger samples for you or even send you a printed version, if you like. I used
Photoshop to manipulate the pictures and layer options to achieve dimension and
excitement with the colors.

I know just what you mean about reaching the next level. I had a set of media
to produce in my concepting class for a New Year's Eve party that was
particularly frustrating. 14 pieces of the campaign, everything cohesive and
carrying the concept and brand. whew. talk about a plateau. I was very proud of
the end results and fully appreciated my teacher's pushing me into that
next/upper level.

it put me in a more professional mindset about my capabilities. Up until
that time, art still felt like a hobby and less like a career choice.

That's interesting that it was the stamp project that brought you to that
mindset.
It was a typography assignment for a poster that made me think that.

It's funny, for me, the projects that I thought I'd never be able to do became
the ones I really loved.

I have Painter Classic. It came with my scanner I think. I've only
opened it to see what it looked like, not really trying to master it. No
manual unless it came with a PDF version, so I just wrote it off. Now
I'll have to drag it back out and look a little deeper.
Don't send me anything. I don't want you to go to that trouble, but I'd
like to see a larger version of them as would everyone else here I'm
sure.

I guess the plateaus come when you force your brain think in a different
way, either by using a different media or style. Changing styles is
probably the most difficult thing I've done artistically speaking. When
I was hired, I had to match my lousy cartooning style to the existing
style that Home Depot used. Since I was more of an illustrator and had
only done minimal cartooning up until that time, it was a mental workout
and took a long time until I was really comfortable. I was much better
at doing the hand lettering since it was already close to my natural
printing.

<< Hi Everyone,

I'm soon gonna lauch couple of web magazines - Music,Youth (and maybe

Design requirements:
+ The design(s) need to look professional and eye catching, at the

+ The design should support multiple columns
+ The links should be text based and there should also be place to

Info about the magazines:

Well, actually A4 is slightly longer than letter size...
Besides that, I suspect that most people aren't able to print to the edge of
their standard.

Thank you all - I think I'll go with what I have unless something comes up.

Thank you all for taking the time and effort to respond. While considering
all of your input and good advice I've tweaked it a bit more. I do notice
that when viewing in Netscape 7 on a Mac the table at the top of the
center
panel will not align at the top.How can I fix this?
Also can anyone give me a clue as to how to assign different Hover
attributes to different sections of the page. I tried in Dreamweaver to
change the attribute in the css but the hover style assigned to the page
over rides all others.

Tony, you'll want to manually open up the CSS file in DW first (not just do
the edit window) so you can see everything in text mode.

Let's say you have a style class called ".section1". To create the special
hover/link colors for things assigned to that class, you'd want to create
things like the following:

..section1 a:link {
color: #004D92;
text-decoration: underline;
background-color: #CCCCCC;
}
..section1 a:visited {
color: #FFFFFF;
}
..section1 a:hover {
color: #00305C;
background-color: #FDD95D;
}
..section1 a:active {
color: #FFFFFF;
background-color: #BF1238;
}
..section1 a {
display: block;
width: 100%;
}

DW does not allow you to create this within the dialog box entry for style
sheets... BUT it will let you edit these items once they've been manually
entered.

I'm actually pretty happy with the results so far, but the new color on the

thin textured layer of plaster that was painted a very dark matte burgandy

are an umber stained oak with some decorative carving and the ceiling is
white to tie it to the rest of the house. No pictures taken yet, but I will

Quick time Pro enables you to do simple video editing and it is much
cheaper than Adobe Premiere or any other software package. You can get
it for only 29.99 US$

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

You can edit MPEG movies perfectly and save them in compressed format,
you can film the scenes with a regular video camcorder and have them
digitized on a cd rom (tons of street shops out there who'll do that for
you) and cut and paste them together to make a small presentation for
your web site. Digital camera would be even easier, I have one.

If you have a copy of Adobe Golive you can do Quick time editing in it
so won't have to buy Quick time pro.
If you have access to an Apple computer iMovie is just the perfect
application.

Best wishes,

Rastin

I holding a magazine publishing contest. I have beem designing graphics

I will mention their name very large on the second page of the magazine
and even do a featured article on them getting real.

I want to call the magazine "Get Real" and will be about the small
fragmented world some people live in. People who give a small token of
something usually something they found or was given to them to
someone else and then expect 'demand' a huge return for the gift.
It will be about people who have no concept of "hey there actually is a
world outside their small brains". You know there are other people out
there. Mostly, it will reveal what the term 'get real' really means.

Of course if the magazine starts to make money the publisher will be
richly rewarded. Usually that happens in heaven.

This may be obvious, but:

The string you're looking for is "rnrn", two returns and two next line
feeds, right.

Well, remember to search for exactly "rnrn", and not "/r/n/r/n" as you
listed. Also, you may have to escape the slashes if you searching for the
pattern (i.e. \r\n\r\n), because you want a literal "" and do not want
actionscript to compile the slash as part of the code.

Also, what type of pattern matching are you using? String matching, or
regular expression?

I've been asking around in several Flash newsgroups, but haven't gotten
a useful response yet.

I'm having a small problem with a Flash file I'm working on. Basically,
it's a meter for a webpage that reads some variables from a txt file.
One of the variables, called "discussion", is a lengthy bunch of text
(2-3 short paragraphs) supplied by another company, and is placed in a
dynamic text field with a scroll bar. Unfortunately, for some reason,
when there is a blank line in the variable description, it shows up as 2
blank lines in the dynamic field.

For example:
in the text file, it's defined like:
&discussion=yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada

yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada&

But displays like this:
"yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada

yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada"

If I view the variables in Flash (when testing), it shows up as:
yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yadarnrnyada yada yada yada
yada yada yada yada

But, if I try to search for "/r/n/r/n" in the variable, it doesn't find
it. Is there a way to parse the variable to remove the blank line?

Joanne Capella
Hello June,

I list all the software programs in a table on my resume:

http://www.dreamscape.com/bowcap/Resume/Resume.html

I don't make distinctions between experince levels. I only list
programs that I have the skill level to use to complete projects. If
I am just beginning or receiving training in a particular program (and
who isn't these days?) I might mention that I'm learning that
particular program in either a cover letter or in an interview if
possible.

Hope this helps.

Joanne
