This is very sad and probably when they do catch whoever did this it will
turn out that there was no real reason for it. Someone just got angry and
struck out. We as a society don't protect those that are not as quite as
smart or who are mentally ill. We cut them loose and expect them to cope as
if they were street smart and tough...most of us couldn't live in the world
we let these people live in.

no, its definitely a spammer, and I've actually been able to track the
creep down. At first I just went to the spammer's webpage and typed
in all kinds of nasty stuff into the order form (he's selling penis
enlargement pills, what else?), hit the 'submit' button, then the
'back' button, then repeated this about a hundred times....I then
(somewhat foolishly) went to the spam newsgroup and posted what I had
done, got one response from somebody who gave me an actual link to a
company who's filed a lawsuit against him, then got a barrage of
messages from people telling me I'm the scumbag for what I did with
the order form....sheesh....I won't wander out of this group again!

If you want your site to render on all browsers, you cannot use XHTML. It's
just not supported in everything yet - same goes for XML. It really sucks,
because I for one would really like to switch technologies right away. But,
it's hard enough developing content that renders the same in IE & Mozilla
(Netscape) & on a Mac without having to develop two more variations of the
output that's either XHTML or not.

Our sites remain strict 4.01, plus CSS & Flash (however Flash and CSS aren't
*required* to view the sites, they just make them look "pretty").

This has generated yet more news, though in a rather freakish way, in this
story about new developments in e-commerce, advertising, etc., ....

The new service is an extension of the bid-for-placement service pioneered
by Overture, in which marketers pay for their ad to appear atop search
results whenever an Internet user types a certain word or phrase. Under that
approach, when an Internet user enters "airline tickets" as a search query,
for example, the text ad of the merchant who has bid the most will appear
atop the results on Overture.com.
...........
When serving ads for content sites, both Overture and Google employ
technology that infers the topic of a page by scanning for words and
phrases, searching through a database of tens of thousands of advertisers,
then delivering a relevant text ad. In some cases that is not difficult. For
instance, on Weather.com's golf forecast page for Norfolk, Va., Google's
service (which it calls AdSense) can deliver ads for marketers who had bid
to have their ads appear above Google search results whenever users type
"Norfolk Virginia golf courses" or some similar phrase.
................
The technology is not yet foolproof. The online edition of The New York
Post, which is owned by the News Corporation, ran an article last month
about a murder in which the victim's body parts were packed in a suitcase,
and Google served up an ad for a luggage dealer.

"We are working with Google to fine-tune this program," said Suzanne Halpin,
a New York Post spokeswoman. "We take it on a case-by-case basis and do our
best to remove inappropriate ads."

xhtml 1.0 transitional and css yes. I don't do proper Netscape 4 support
unless I feel it especially necessary (the site is still usable but as a
'text-only' style job) and apart from that IE5 and it's box-model is the
only real workaround that's a nuisance.

Though the lower-budget jobs still get done with tables because when time is
short I'm still quicker with nested-table mayhem.

They've relaxed the rules on teacher qualifications because there are so few
*good* people going into the profession. Not only do you have to be a
teacher, but you have to be Mommy and Daddy (even at the college level), a
social worker, etc. And it's at a low-level salary. Certainly doesn't
encourage the best and the brightest to join the ranks, unfortunately.

I want a Master's so I may eventually teach college.  We have two
MFA's
here
that I'm aware of...one at the university I graduated from (which
someone
told me isn't exactly something that's looked well upon) and one from
the
University of Oklahoma...where they practically expect you to move
onto
campus and be a full-time student (not an option).  Maybe OU has
changed
though.

I know my one Typography teacher a few years ago...oh man did he suck ass!
They finally sacked him like 3 or 4 weeks into the class because people
complained. Of course his replacement was the dragon lady from hell, but
that's another story...

This guy was completely unprepared, didn't know jack about the history of
typography... They've had to sack a few teachers like that from what I
understand.

I know I could teach (community college or HS level), but I don't have the
degree or the experience, and that sucks. In florida you need I think two
degrees higher than the level you want to teach, or equivalent experience.

They've relaxed the rules on teacher qualifications because there are so
few
*good* people going into the profession.  Not only do you have to be a
teacher, but you have to be Mommy and Daddy (even at the college level), a
social worker, etc.  And it's at a low-level salary.  Certainly doesn't
encourage the best and the brightest to join the ranks, unfortunately.

Pretty good, but it still needs work.

1) The counter (white space) on the "e" is too small.

2) The "f" is too flat on top. The original starts with a taper and ends
with a bulb. A small point, but it makes the "f" more graceful.

3) Be careful with the subtle thicks and thins; they give the word character
and increase legibility.

4) The new "o" needs to slant right; it's too straight up and down, which
interrupts the flow.

5) The crossbar and swoosh of the "t" are too thick. This produces an
unwanted counter and restricts the flow. Look at the bulb at the end of the
crossbar.

6) The subhead is too big and too dark; it's sucking energy away from
"Lefont."

Spend another hour on those and you'll have your first vector logo!

Yeah, I know, I'll work on it some more. I knew I needed to, this was
basically just to show "Hey, this is what I can do in one hour, for all of
you who say that it would take 10 minutes or less to trace with the pen
tool." My first try, ok? Lol, I suck.

Yikes....the way I see it, a year of working experience on the field
is equal to more than a year of education (sometimes 2 years,
sometimes even more depending on the pace of the work/intensity), not
the other way around.

Doing the pen well is an art. It takes practice.
Try applying one of the caligraphy or ink brushes to the stroke to get the
thick/thin.

Yeah, I tried that, didn't help much. I got some unsolictied contributions
from a few other posters here who did much better than I did, and said I
could use their work. Which I feel kinda bad about actually. I tried to
make myself feel better by adjusting the path a little, so at least I
contributed something.

Yeah, the pen tools are great . . . but those aren't traces. It's
following exactly someone else's line that I was having trouble with.

Illustrator. It's ok, I'm done with the project now. I took what someone
else had sent me and used it as a reference to redo what I had done and
tweak it, and the boss is happy, so I'm done.
