Hey Matt,
Doing mock projects is an excellent idea to get into thinking like a designer
and a good way to get acquainted with what your software can do.

Good luck with the book list. Try some used books stores in your city or search
online. I found several used copies of titles I wanted at Amazon way cheaper
than the full price and in really decent condition.

Stick around here, too, and asks lots of questions. :)
cheers!

Ok, well, here's one example: This is a menu for a fictional Chicago
restaurant I did because I wanted to see what I was capable of. Page
layout was done in ID2, graphics plucked from Microsoft's clip gallery.
Pages 4 and 5 are blank because I haven't transferred the old menu I drew
up in MS Word over yet, but everything else is there.

It currently looks pretty plain to me, as far as most menus go. Of course,
maybe that's a good thing.

I also found Jeff's post archived @ Google - and wow. I've got some
reading to do :) I already ordered Robin Williams' book (non-designer's
design book), and will start looking in my local libraries for some of the
more expensive ones. I would assume that if public libraries don't have
the books, CCAD's library definitely should.

The icons on your home page definately convey a medical or medicinal concept.
Is this what you want? I agree with the person who mentioned a scientific feel.
The layout and design is very nice and the icons are very well done.

Did you want pac-man partnerships? I like #5 but I'm thinking of the game right
away. Is this site selling medicine or pills? If it were me I'd change all the
icons to something related to people, instead of science/scientifics. JMO I'm
probably missing the point of this site but I thought it was for partnerships.

They pretty much alll look nice but they don't say 'partnership' to
me. And the 'pill' looks like a an old-style radio microphone when 2
people are opening their mouths at it.

Maybe something more suggestive of a union of partners. Like a DNA
double helix that is separated on one end but intertwined on the
other. Sperm joining egg. Pouring 2 test tubes of liquid into one
beaker. You get the idea...

You cover the basic for what you have to offer in your work,
so people do have a good idea of what you can do as far
as your work.

However, it is rather dry and static as far as a web design page goes,
I have to agree loosen it up a bit and be more expressive.
A litle more eye candy would go a long ways.

"control yourself but act natural"
just like that saying.

Thought I'd weigh in on this one. I agree with 48073 on the idea that #4
is close to your "propaganda" icon, but I like the idea - to me, there's
nothing wrong with a similar icon as long as it still gets the right
message across, which this one does, to me. I also like #1, the whole
"collaborative effort" thing jumps out when I look at #1.

#2 and #3 don't look like they fit the rest of the theme to me, although
they'd be good in their own right.

My bet would be that if you're looking for an icon that's different from
all the rest, go with #1. If you don't mind similarity, go with #4.

I got it to come up. Actually Matt, that's some nifty formatting of the inside
pages' text. Nice tight grid.
The cover could be more exciting and cohesive to the sports theme, ie: where's
da Bears! :)
Photos of the plates, desserts, etc are always a good idea. Ice cold beer mugs,
drippy chicken wings, fat burgers with fries, you get my drift.
[can you tell it's lunch time??]

Some more attention to your front door, the cover layout, font choices and
variations thereof, exciting photos both ballgame and food, and a more unified
flow/theme throughout all the pages and you'd score. :)

Need photos? Search 'royalty free stock photo' and find a photo site [Barton,
what's your URL??] where you can download comps or grab your camera and take a
few shots of your own creations.

Look at everything and study the menus, signs, ads, bookcovers, mag layouts, CD
covers, etc that really grab your attention. Ask yourself why and make a note
of your answer.
Invest in a sketchpad and pencils/pens and do some mock logos, layouts,
illustrations for existing or fictional products.

Shove some stuff around on this menu or consider trying another mock project.
Practice. Read. Practice. Read some more. :)

Caroline Davidson was a student at Portland State University interested in
advertising. She met Phil Knight while he was teaching accounting classes
and she started doing some freelance work for his company.

Phil Knight asked Caroline to design a logo that could be placed on the side
of a shoe. She handed him the SWOOSH, he handed her $35.

In spring of 1972, the first shoe with the NIKE SWOOSH was introduced . the
rest is history"

What a great story. Well, obviously not so great for Ms. Davidson.
Maybe great is not the right word. Pathetic maybe.

Anyway, is this a true story, or is it one of those Urban Legends?

Thanks! That costumes photo is just a placeholder, though. I am updating

facing in the costume pic, because it looked weird for them to be facing
the same way, and it looked weird to flip her pic.

And here are some notes.  The "costumes" pic on the first page is just a
placeholder until she sends me the costume pictures. I will pick my
favorite or she can and I will make a new link image like the one for the
dolls, with just one costume.  The costume link does not go anywhere yet.
The dolls section is almost complete.  I will be adding prices and an email
link to each one once she figures out how much to charge.  Also, some of
the doll pages will have special notes if needed on specific methods, such
as the fact that some of the dolls' hair was completely re-threaded.

Having a hard time coming up with names for a lot of the dolls!  If you
think of any and want to share, that would be nice, but I'm not really
asking for it because I know I'd get flamed for not offering to pay for
helping me name the dolls.  ;o)

Anyway, as usual, all comments welcome, good and bad. Thanks!

Quick question, have you considered offset or jobbing to a commercial
printer if you are talking about lots of 1000's? No printer I am aware of in
that price range can cost efficiently compete with jobbing it out,

If you're printing thousands of letterheads, you and your clients will both
be better off going to an offset printer or quick printer. Your cost per
page will be less and you'll get better quality.

I can't be sure, but it's probably got something to do with the colorspace
you're using in Photoshop vs the colorspace available in IE. The IE pic is
actually displaying some banding like a GIF would. One thing you can be
certain of... getting the colors to an exact match in print and online is
going to be almost impossible.

first page not available, i'm not here to scroll through the directories
until i find a page,
although i did ;o) and i found that the page i went to had broken links to
all the images and was totally out of control.

A good thing is to go on the site yourself to make sure it's not too bad
before posting it ;o)

What, Olivier, you're Swiss too!? 8) That is so cool. Are you actually in
Switzerland?

I study in Germany these days, but I'm originally from Basel and spending my
summer break here right now. Loving it - except for the heat!
