Hi,

I actually have a job I am content with but feel like my resume needs to be

how to state your software experience in a resume.  For now, I've lumped my
software experience into two categories..."programs I've used" vs "programs
I'm fairly or very familiar with."  I was thinking there might be a better
way to describe my experience than this.  I was also wondering how you might
determine your skill level in a program.  Like what separates "intermediate"
from "advanced" ?

Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you list specific applications, not just the software
publishing company. I couldn't count the number of resumes we saw that
listed "proficient with Microsoft" or "knows Adobe". Microsoft what?
Adobe what? Both companies product hundreds of products, and I don't
think ANYONE knows all of them. :)

a good quality inkjet printer really is very good these days - I would
seriously consider it over a laser and save yourself a lot of money - I've
used Epson's mainly and found that the quality is more than enough for
portfolio pieces, proofs etc - just make sure you get some decent paper for
it and it will hold a very high resolution (1440+ ...not tried the 2880 ones
yet, but after about 720 most people are hard pushed to notice any
difference, and I'm not even sure most decent paper can even handle above
1440)

also with something cheaper like an Epson you're going to find it much
easier to try them out and buy, and get support on the high street

I have been looking for a while and asking local computer retailers and

I was wondering if anyone could suggest :

1.    A good A3 Colour Printer (to be used for University Portfolio and
printing proofs/roughs for website layouts)

2.    Any retailers in the U.K that I might be able to order one from,
preferably Mail Order or retailers in and around Manchester?

Thanks in advance

Hi Rob!

I have the same uses as yourself for A3 (portfolio and design/web design
concepts), at home I use the Epson 1290 A3, and at work I have the HP A3
CP1700.

Both are really great printers in terms of quality - upto 2400dpi.

The main difference between the two for me is the ink refill costs. I always
use 'official' cartridges; the Epson takes 2 cartridges - ; one black about
(17 from Jessops), one colour cartridge about (16).

The HP has 4 cartridges - CMYK - each are about 22 each! The amount of ink
is much greater and you do benefit from the times you have a 'blue' phase
with your work and it not wiping out an entire colour cartridge.

In terms of reliability - I'm on my second Epson (the older model lasted 15
months and died), my current Epson has 'issues' with the black ink - so I'd
go for the HP if you can live with the ink costs.

BTW they HP is a beast in terms of size!

In terms of places to buy from: I work in Manchester myself - try

http://www.microdirect.co.uk or
http://www.scan.co.uk (best to go in person!)

Online - try Dabs.com

Hope that helps !

I'm not sure if you're correct, but that would mean the end of Microsoft...
all the online presence,
and the service packs, web updates, and so on, is available through IE, and
if they don't put it with Windows directly they will run to their ruin...
moreover Internet Explorer has Explorer in it, and what's the name of the
Windows Kernel ? Explorer... therefore it's all integrated fully integrated
now, and i certainly don't think they will go and separate both things,
after all these anti-trust issues and so on they have gone through because
of that.

No, it's built into Windows 6.0 (end of next year). I'm running Office 2003
already, and it doesn't have IE "built-in". Windows 5.2 (Windows Server
2003) has it built in already, and the way Windows 5.1 (XP) behaves, it's
practically there anyway.

That would have been a correct assumption, I think as long as they (M$)

any problem bundling products.

Personally, I list the software starting with most relevant to the job I am
applying for. As I'm expreienced in many, many different programs, this
seemed the ideal thing for me rather than listing every program I know. Then
I list at the end a few others that might be relevant to the job. So it
would be along the lines of: "I have in-depth knowledge of QuarkXpress,
Photoshop, Illustrator etc etc" (listing the most important ones to the job
I am applying for). Then I would be put "I also have knowledge of a number
of other software programmes including: Microsoft Office, 4sight Manager etc
etc"

Try the local yellow pages and look under printers for those that specialize
in die cut goods. Chances are, if you want to keep your costs down, you will
want to use a printer who has a die on hand to cut the job to your spec.
There are some very standard configurations - 3" pockets, 4" pockets,
pockets only in the front or back or both, slits for business cards or not.
If your folder does not meet those standard configurations, you may have to
pay to have a die made that will cut to your specs.

A word of catuion however. Check the quality of their printing before giving
them the print job and make sure it matches the quality that you are looking
for. Some companies that specialize in die cutting are not high end
printers. If you use a company that does not die cut in-house, they will
sub-contract that portion of the job to a die cutter. It will cost slightly
more as the printer will mark-up the cost of the die cutting but if you
require a high end print job, this may be the way to go.

BTW, locally we have a great publication called Ad Facts that is a directory
of vendors of graphic arts services in our area. In that book you can look
up who specializes in what. It is a very handy publication to have. I don't
know if you have a similar service in your area, but it is really a great
help to designers in our locale.

Most commercial printers should be able to do that, die cut in a shape you

want. It's just tad more expensive, since they need to do custom setup.
Although, having dealt with a few of them, not all have the ability to print
sheets bigger than 11x17.
Just call around, or check the printers online.

hi mark,

looks good overall, here are a few comments ;

on homepage : website index link ? why not just keep home as a link as on
the other pages ? not very clear to me.

Company info and news, bold the dates and titles of topics like on other
sections, will make things stick out.Same comments go for Delivers &
returns, privacy policy, and payments&pricing.

Credit Card security and other pages with not much text might be put
together as a specific section ? or else put them a little lower, they seem
stuck up top like by magneto power ..

on first link, it's "view shopping basket" and on the second one (the

trolley to do so ;oppp

Tim, your text graphics are very dithered/pixelated - most of that could be
cleared up by using the correct image format. Your menu - you've got it all
as JPGs - they should be GIFs instead. Your top ad/banner/logo thingy -
you've got it as a JPG where it should also be a GIF. Your Emergency and
Maintenance boxes are both JPGs where they should be GIFs... well looking at
it again, all your text is bitmapped and it doesn't need to be so. If
someone came to your site with images turned off, with a text-only browser,
or as a sight-impared person using a screen reader - they'd get nothing.
They'd have no idea of what you're trying to promote. Use the ALT tags for
the images and unless it has to be a graphic, make the "text" actually be
text.

Mark,
The site is very attractive, easy to navigate and clean. I like the
color choices. It loaded rather slow on my computer, but it could be
my sluggish network.

Looks good, Mark. Nothing to say about it that hasn't been said.

There are legibility issues and fuzziness.
Also, text varies too much in size.

fontExplorer, or printer's apprentice,
what is quite good actually is to use ATM Light with Typograf or with
Printer's apprentice combined..

Anyone have a good recommendation for a font explorer/viewer?

ATM is a real pain in the ass when exploring the harddrive for
font files, especially those you dont have installed yet.

Thank You, Mark

OK, I see from the Printer's Apprentice site that their program does the
catalog printing routine ... seems well worth the $25 for that feature.

Do any of the suggested font viewers have the ability to create a print
out
that displays a sample line (either the alpha/numeric characters or a
standard test block) from each font in the catalog?  I know Bitstream's
FontNavigator does not do this, and can't remember if ATM does it, but I
don't think so.

Yes, ATM does it SUPERB... For the Suitcase - don't know!

ATM: File/Preferences/... go to Printing Tab in pull-down menu an there you
can choose size, type and style to print out your fonts... I have my book of
fonts together with it's full name, family name, weight, Manufacturer etc.

Nice!

yep width=100% (not netscrape tho) and make sure you have your flash export
settings to erm, theres an option for how it treats a distortion in the
stage erm, forgot what its called, any way it can tell flash to centre the
content across a distorted stage, then just make sure your flash imagery
extends beyond the default stage area

alchemy mindworks fontwrangler is the one i use... it prints off contact
sheets of all your fonts, or selected fonts etc etc etc... and the way it
prints it is also easily customisable... doesnt have to be registered to do
this either!

Many of you have seen my websites main page which this icon will need to fit
into style-wise:

I'm usually sorry when I do this. I already have my own opinion but was just
curious what ya'lls reaction might be. Thought putting these up for critique
might actually be fun this time (famous last words I'm sure).

I would choose #4 if it was not so close to your propaganda icon.
So I choose #5.

Give your object a gradient and then drag your PMS swatches to each of the
gradient controls on the Gradient palette box.

AI files are native illustrator files, that's right, and that means only
Illustrator can make any use of them...well InDesign can now too. EPS files
on the otherhand are unversally accepted. Pretty much every graphics
programme can open up EPS files. They contain the same information as the
AI files do, but they're designed to be used by more than illustrator. Use
the AI files when working in illustrator then save the files as EPS when you
go to lay them out in Quark or send them to a printer, etc...

NG,

I am doing a 2 color logo in Illustrator that needs to be beveled and
gradate between PMS(Red) and Black.  (I know how to do this in Photoshop -
but it would end up 4 color).
Anyone willing to explain how I can do this?

Also, I am using Illustrator on a PC... what is the difference between
saving as .ai or .eps? I know .AI is 'native" - but they both act the same
in Illustrator when opened.

Many thanks,
Kathy
