I am not concerned about people saving my pictures, but would like to
know if I can prevent people from linking to my pictures. I used an
online checker yesterday and found web sites (can you believe a few
real estate sites) that are actually linking to some of my "Arizona"
pictures, not even the decency to right click and put them on their
own site.....
I know I can just change the name, then their link goes poof,, but
that could get to be a pain... I have MANY pictures, and found more
then a few that others have linked too..

htaccess

not if you're on an NT or W2K server - they don't use .htaccess files

Well, that would be a bigger problem than having people stealing your
images! Fix that immediately!

Can I come, local river's dried up ;)

The Tennessee, Clinch, Little Pigeon and all the others are running high
and
wide, thanks to all the rain we had this spring.
Hot here -- over 100 today -- but dry and pleasant with a cool breeze
off
the
mountains in the evening. Turned off the air conditioner and opened the
windows.
The apartment complex pool is outside my office window. I'll head out
there
when it gets less crowded with kids. :)

I'm in the UK, not many rivers here you'd care to go anywhere near due to
complete lack of control over pollution from a succession of goverments,
but
I'm hoping to get over to Norway to see family in the next 2 months where
I
know it'll be 80 - 100 & plenty of lovely, clean lakes & rivers to go
diving
about in :)

If so, you have really big problems, IMO.

OTOH, you dont see any tick-boxes stating race in Sweden since its
against
the law, but that doesn't stop discrimination. It finds other ways, more
subtile. I do think society has to make real clear that it does not
accept
discrimination. The only way to do that is to market those values and to
adjust the leaal system.

For instance is it now illegal to wear nazi symbols in public. Strangly
though, one can carry the image of Stalin without being arrested...
Probably
the Stalin brand is not so strong as the swastika...

/Tomas

It is bizarre that in any democratic society, or one closely resembling
one
would outlaw any political symbol. I think Germany and France are also
wrong in
that regard. They are commiting the same actions that the Nazis were well
known
for.

tomas.holm
Well to change things one has to act. It is a fine line between doing to
much and doing to little.
If in a democracy we agree that discrimination is bad - lets fight to remove
it. Propaganda and laws are the only things that will work. You cant make
laws that has no acceptance by the public, so in order to change things you
have to change opinions first.

"You can't change the world, but you can change the facts. And when you
change the facts, you change points of view. And when you change points of
view, you may change a vote. And when you change a vote, You may change the
world" - Depeche Mode (All right, I'm a huge fan...)

black person a 'nigger' in Belgrade a nasty crime against a human. In
the US, yes, it would be nasty. Which is unfortunate. A 'negro' manss
black. The word that is. So why not call a black person black?

We do. What makes you think we don't? We just don't call them "niggers."
It is
a derogatory word, period.  Why is that hard to understand?

That's very unfortunate.

Why do you consider that not be able to use the word "nigger" in America
is
"unfortunate?"

Well, now I know what's the big deal about this thread. You think I'm
talking about *using* the word, don't you? You might think that I would use
the first chance I get to call a black man 'nigger,' which is absolutely a
pile of crap. Maybe you never seriously looked at anything that I wrote so
far?

I'm talking about the *meaning* and *implication*. Not *using* the word,
but the fact that the word carries such meaning. Not the word as an
incarnation of the meaning, but the meaning itself. In most roman languages
'negro' or any version of it (like 'nero,' or 'nigger') means 'black' (as
black shoe, black car... the coulor). The fact that such a word has come to
have other implication (a 'lowlife,' maybe?) is very unfortunate.

That is, IMO, very far from being undone simply by stopping to use the
word. It will take a lot of apologizing and tons of history lesson for
things to change. The word might not be used anymore, but its meaning is
still there. And, AFAIK, the meaning is incarnated into many new forms that
we might not notice untill someone gets really angry. At least in the UK,
it is highly likely. A black friend from Sudan got rejected in a job
intervew despite his Master's degree, despite his five years of experience,
despite his fluent English -- just because he was living in the black
neighbourhood. When he lied about his address the next time, he got the
job. And that may only be one small part of it.

It is a good idea, OTOH, that people stopped calling a black man a 'nigger'
in the US. But it's unfortunate that someone had to get pissed off about it
first. Get my drift now?

QUOTE

I never minded people calling me yellow. Also, being yellow does have
some advantages and disadvantages that cannot/souldn't be easily

Branko

Like I said above the word black is used here without any problems. Negro
on
the other hand is not often used anymore.

And I say it's good it isn't. But that's not the main point. It really has
to go beyond the words. When some *real* change is made, the words would,
hopefully, even lose their *acquired* meanings. Hopefully. IMO, merely not
using the words is, to say the least, superficial, even though it is a
great progress.

There are still KKK outposts in the US. That's very indicative, IMO. Kinda

i wanted the site to look sort of 'young' - hard to describe

there is only one page at the minute to view so i can make lots of changes

nothing in common to Africans besides physical appearances. :)

Well, that's not what 2Pac died for. Anyway, I was talking about my
friends in Belgrade, who *are* from Africa (Sudan, Guinea Bisao,
Etiopia, Nigeria).

2Pac? Huh??

Yeah, 2Pac. Like "they stole our history..." Like "the black population
should stand up," and not in those exact words...

Yeah, I know. That's my point. That's why I wouldn't consider calling
black person a 'nigger' in Belgrade a nasty crime against a human. In
the US, yes, it would be nasty. Which is unfortunate. A 'negro' manss
black. The word that is. So why not call a black person black?

We do. What makes you think we don't? We just don't call them
"niggers."

It is
a derogatory word, period.  Why is that hard to understand?

That's very unfortunate.

Why do you consider that not be able to use the word "nigger" in
America
is
"unfortunate?"

Well, now I know what's the big deal about this thread. You think I'm
talking about *using* the word, don't you? You might think that I would
use the first chance I get to call a black man 'nigger,' which is
absolutely a pile of crap. Maybe you never seriously looked at anything
that I wrote so far?

I'm talking about the *meaning* and *implication*. Not *using* the word,
but the fact that the word carries such meaning. Not the word as an
incarnation of the meaning, but the meaning itself. In most roman
languages 'negro' or any version of it (like 'nero,' or 'nigger') means
'black' (as black shoe, black car... the coulor). The fact that such a
word has come to have other implication (a 'lowlife,' maybe?) is very
unfortunate.

That is, IMO, very far from being undone simply by stopping to use the
word. It will take a lot of apologizing and tons of history lesson for
things to change. The word might not be used anymore, but its meaning is
still there. And, AFAIK, the meaning is incarnated into many new forms
that we might not notice untill someone gets really angry. At least in
the UK, it is highly likely. A black friend from Sudan got rejected in a
job intervew despite his Master's degree, despite his five years of
experience, despite his fluent English -- just because he was living in
the black neighbourhood. When he lied about his address the next time,
he
got the job. And that may only be one small part of it.

It is a good idea, OTOH, that people stopped calling a black man a
'nigger' in the US. But it's unfortunate that someone had to get pissed
off about it first. Get my drift now?

I never minded people calling me yellow. Also, being yellow does have
some advantages and disadvantages that cannot/souldn't be easily
overlooked.

Branko

Like I said above the word black is used here without any problems.
Negro on
the other hand is not often used anymore.

And I say it's good it isn't. But that's not the main point. It really
has to go beyond the words. When some *real* change is made, the words
would, hopefully, even lose their *acquired* meanings. Hopefully. IMO,
merely not using the words is, to say the least, superficial, even
though
it is a great progress.

There are still KKK outposts in the US. That's very indicative, IMO.
Kinda like a cancer that's not been removed completely.

I know English is not my primary language, but you seem to misinterpret
things in a big way. Actually, I see that you are leaving some very
important parts out when quoting my msgs, which leads me to a conclusion
that you really are merely interpreting what I write. (Kinda like Google
robots.)

I am not at all 'surprised' "that 'nigger' has negative connotations." I
also do not agree that the situation is such *only* due to "its past use."
It is the whole scenario, of which the *words* are just a minor part, that
is really sickening (and also not surprising at all). Words are just words,
until you put them into a context. And the context is what bothers me. You
can always change the words or lose them completely without changing a
thing.

Hi Lenny,

I would say:

1) What do you want and in what format or medium, and size or resolution?
2) When do you need this?
3) What is your budget for this, and are you the one to pay me?
4) Can you show me samples that are similar to what you would like me to do?
5) Have you had anyone do this for you before?
6) How and where will this be used? Is it one piece for a one-time use, or
will it be used extensively, and by whom?
7) If this is to be computer-generated, do you have a preference as to which
software program or style?
8) How will you pay me; and in what increments would you prefer (if it is a
longer term or larger job)?
9) Will this be printed; and if so, what are your digital requirements?
10) What are your expectations as to who owns the rights to this artwork, or
its possible transfer of rights?

Hope that helps. :)

Hey snafu...

From what I could see, there was some really nice work there. I'm still on
56K until a week on Saturday so the thing took years to load. I'm curious;
why did it make you think of me? lol

I love graffitti art, although it often has a bad name due to either a lack
of understanding or the effecting of it by a non-artistic individual. Many
older people in my local community, for example, despise the abundance of
graffitti art on our regional rail system. Yet I fail to understand why
anyone who understands art could have a problem with young artists
expressing their art in such a public way; it doesn't hurt anybody. True,
the kids doing it could be killed by passing trains, but to me, to take that
risk for their artwork makes it all the more powerful.

On the other hand, there's a lot of very poor 'graffitti' around... a lot of
this is tagging. Tagging here has degenerated really... from what it was as
I understand it in the 80s and 90s on the trains in NYC. In those days it
was a true art form... it coloured the lives of everyday people and
distracted them from the boring old grey carriages. The tags were carriage
wide in many cases. Round here, people tag for the sake of it... a squiggle
is what usually is classed as a 'tag'. I'm no expert nor a graffitti writer
myself, so forgive me if the same was common practice before. My point is, I
hate to see the pointless defacement of things like signs, ATM machines etc.
That just pisses people off and gives the art a bad name.
